📐 How the Tile Calculator Works

Total Area (sq ft) = Room Length × Room Width Tiles (no waste) = Total Area ÷ Tile Area (Tile Area = Tile L × Tile W) Tiles (with waste) = Tiles × (1 + Wastage%) Boxes needed = Tiles ÷ Tiles per Box (round up) Tile Adhesive (5kg bag covers ~5 m²): Adhesive bags = Area(m²) ÷ 5 Grout Quantity (kg): Grout = (Tile L + Tile W) × Joint Width × Thickness × Density Approx: 0.5–2 kg per m² depending on joint width Cost Estimate = Boxes × Price per Box
Always buy 10% more tiles than calculated for straight cuts and 15–20% more for diagonal/herringbone patterns. It is very difficult to match old tile batches later.

📋 Standard Tile Sizes & Coverage Reference

Different tile sizes give different aesthetics and have different installation requirements. Larger tiles make rooms feel bigger but require flatter floors and more precise installation.

🎨 Tile Laying Patterns & Wastage Guide

The pattern you choose affects how many extra tiles you need to buy for cuts. Plan your pattern before ordering to avoid wastage or shortages.

PatternExtra WastageDifficultyBest For
Straight / Grid10%EasyAll rooms — most common in Pakistan
Offset / Brick Bond10–12%EasyKitchens, bathrooms, corridors
Diagonal (45°)15–20%MediumSmall rooms — makes room look bigger
Herringbone15–20%HardFeature areas, hallways
Basket Weave12–15%MediumDecorative floors
Versailles (mixed sizes)15–25%HardLuxury outdoor areas
💡 For diagonal patterns, always add at least 15–20% wastage. Every border tile needs to be cut at 45°, which wastes the remaining triangle. For a 10×10 room diagonal tiled, you may waste 20–30 extra tiles on border cuts alone.

💡 Expert Tips for Perfect Tile Work

Before You Start

  • Always buy all tiles from the same batch (check batch number on box) — colour and tone vary between batches
  • Store tiles flat, out of direct sunlight for 24 hours before fixing to acclimatise
  • Plan your layout from the centre of the room — never start from a corner
  • Snap chalk lines to ensure perfectly straight grid lines before fixing first tile

During Fixing

  • Always back-butter (apply adhesive to tile back) for large format tiles — prevent hollow spots
  • Use spacers of consistent size for uniform grout joints — 2mm for rectified, 3–5mm for standard tiles
  • Check for level and alignment every 4–5 tiles — small errors accumulate quickly
  • Do not walk on freshly laid tiles for 24 hours — adhesive needs to set
  • Apply grout only after 24 hours — clean grout haze within 30 minutes of application
⚠️ Common Mistake: Grouting too soon. If you grout before adhesive has fully set (minimum 24 hours), movement in the adhesive can cause tiles to crack or loosen. Wait the full curing time, especially in cold weather where adhesive sets slower.

❓ Frequently Asked Questions

Room area = 10 × 12 = 120 sq ft. Tile area = 1.5 × 1.5 = 2.25 sq ft. Tiles without waste = 120 ÷ 2.25 = 53.3 → 54 tiles. With 10% wastage = 54 × 1.10 = 59.4 → 60 tiles. If tiles come 6 per box: 60 ÷ 6 = 10 boxes. Always buy 1 extra box (11 boxes total) for future repairs. Cost at PKR 1,800/box: PKR 19,800.
Ceramic tiles: Made from red/white clay, glazed surface, water absorption 3–7%, softer and easier to cut, suitable for walls and light-traffic floors, cheaper (PKR 800–2,400/box). Porcelain tiles: Made from kaolin clay at higher temperature, water absorption <0.5%, much harder and denser, suitable for heavy traffic floors, outdoor areas, and walls. More expensive (PKR 2,500–12,000/box) but more durable. For Pakistani homes: use ceramic for bathroom walls, porcelain for floors and external areas.
Yes, in most cases you can tile over existing tiles if: 1) Old tiles are firmly bonded (none hollow or loose) 2) The extra weight will not overload the floor structure 3) The added height (typically 10–15mm) will not cause door clearance issues. Use a flexible tile adhesive rather than standard sand-cement when tiling over old tiles. First key/scarify the surface and apply bonding agent for better adhesion. This is common practice in Pakistan for bathroom renovations.
Bathroom wall tiles have more cuts than floor tiles due to plumbing fixtures, corners, and window niches. Use these wastage percentages: Simple bathroom with few fittings: 10–12%. Bathroom with many fixtures (shower niche, soap dish, towel bars): 15%. Small bathroom with diagonal tiles: 20–25%. Always add an extra 5% if tiles must be cut around curved or irregular surfaces like round pipes.
Standard cement-based tile adhesive (most common in Pakistan): Initial set = 2–4 hours · Full cure = 24 hours before walking · Grouting: after 24 hours · Full load bearing: after 72 hours. For fast-set adhesive: walking after 3–4 hours, grouting after 6 hours. In cold weather (below 10°C, common in winters in Islamabad/KPK), allow double the curing time. Never rush the curing process — it is the leading cause of tile failures.
